Which route should I take to become an electrician?

The electrical industry is vast and encompasses widely differing jobs, the first decision a potential entrant has to make is which section of the industry they wish to enter.

A broad distinction can be made between those who work on 3-phase systems, as found in large industrial and commercial buildings, and those who concentrate on the domestic/light commercial sector, mostly single phase systems.

Industrial Qualifications

A recognised apprenticeship cumulating in an NVQ level 3 is a typical requirement. The apprenticeship would last about 3 years and would include day release to attend college to gain the current C&G qualification 2360 at Level 3.

The combination of college and on-the-job training allows the holder to apply for a Joint Industry Board (JIB) card which is accepted by many employers as proof of competence.

Domestic/Light Commercial Qualifications

These are centred around the need to be Part P registered. Currently the minimum requirement of most registration bodies is the C&G 2382-10 (17th Edition Wiring Regulations) and the 2392-10 (Fundamental Inspection and Testing).

This route into the industry is more suited to those who are entering the industry as adults.
