AI applications rely heavily on advanced computing power, particularly for training and operating models such as natural language processing tools and image recognition systems. These systems run on energy-intensive servers housed in data centres, which are becoming increasingly central components of the world’s digital ecosystem.

With an influx of AI use, the need for reliable and scalable data centres has soared, threatening to outstrip global supply. However, building and maintaining these centres requires a significant amount of infrastructure — most notably, the electrical systems capable of supporting their enormous power draw. Energy demand from modern data centres is so high that it has altered the trajectory of overall electricity consumption after decades of stagnation. To function effectively, data centres need advanced electrical networks that integrate massive cooling mechanisms, backup power systems, and energy optimisation technologies.

This shift has placed electricians at the heart of IT and AI development. With tech giants like Google pledging US$10 million to train electricians, it’s clear that skilled professionals are needed to lay the literal and metaphorical groundwork for this new era of technological advancement. The View From The UK

As it currently stands, the UK something of an outlier in the data centre market. Although British companies and individuals use AI applications on a huge scale (mostly LLMs incorporated into mobile apps), these applications are largely hosted offshore. Of the world’s 15 largest data centres, eight are based in the USA and three are in China, with only three in Europe and one in India.

It is likely that most of your ChatGPT outputs are routed from Nevada or Heilongjiang Province (China), alongside your Google search results and Facebook feed. Of the European data centres, however, the UK is represented by the huge CWL1 Data Centre in Newport, Wales, which is ranked as the seventh largest in the world. The Labour government is also strongly committed to AI, and it’s possible that strong investment in new data centres could be on the horizon over the coming years.

For electricians, the AI boom/data centre could offer a lucrative chance to expand their roles and expertise. Key pathways for career growth include:
