The main steps to becoming an electrician:


Step 1:

Complete the City & Guilds 2365 Level 2 Diploma

  • This course gives candidates with no previous electrical experience the competence required to become an electrician’s mate and is the first step to becoming ECS gold card qualified.
  • This course typically takes around 15-weeks to complete. PTT offers evening classes to fit around your work-life!
  • The Level 2 C&G 2365 diploma is designed to help those that want to get started within the world of electrical installation but don’t currently have a job in the trade.
Step 1: Complete the City & Guilds 2365 Level 2 Diploma

This course is comprised of five units which are a mixture of practical and written work. These include:

-Health & Safety

-Electrical Scientific Principles

-Electrical Installation technology

-Practical unit (bay build)

-Communication within the building industry

PTT also provide a 3-week intensive course for those that prefer the delivery this way over the evenings presentation.

Step 2: Complete the City & Guilds 2365 Level 3 Diplom

Complete the City & Guilds 2366 Level 3 Diploma

  • This course gives candidates with the Level 2 diploma the skills and knowledge to gain your Level 3 qualification and become an Electrical Improver. After completion, you are only one step away from being gold-card qualified.
  • The Level 3 City & Guilds 2366 diploma in electrical installation is designed to help those who want to get fully qualified within the electrical field. This course will enable you to become an electrical improver on-site. and you will then have to complete the NVQ portfolio to sit your endpoint assessment (AM2) and become a fully qualified electrician.

This course is comprised of six units which are a mixture of practical and written work. These include:

– Environmental Technologies

-Electrical Scientific Principles (Level 3)

-Fault diagnosis and rectification

-Inspection, Testing and Commissioning

-Electrical Systems Design

-Career Awareness

PTT also provide a 3-week intensive course for those that prefer the delivery this way over the evenings presentation.

Step 3:

Complete the City & Guilds 2357 qualification

  • C&G 2357 is for electricians who have previously completed their level 2 and 3 Diploma in Electrical Installations (2366) or equivalent older qualifications and are now in the final stages of becoming fully qualified Electricians.
  • C&G 2357 (onsite portfolio) is to demonstrate evidence of your skills. It will require you to be in electrical employment, so your assessor can observe you working directly.
  • £1500.00 excl. VAT

Complete the AM2 Qualification

Complete the AM2 Qualification

  • The AM2 is aimed at “new entrants” to the industry such as an apprentice or trainees.
  • AM2 is the final unit of the electrical installation qualification, it has been the means of assessing the competence of electrical installers for over 30 years.
  • PTT offer a 1 or 2-day AM2 prep course to help students practice for their exam. 
  • On completion of the AM2, you will be eligible to apply for the ECS gold card.

You are now eligible to apply for an ECS Gold Card!

The Installation Electrician ECS gold card is for Level 3 competency-based (NVQ) skilled individuals who work unsupervised on the installation, commissioning and maintenance of low voltage electrical and electronic equipment and appliances in a consumer’s electrical installation.

The gold card shows that the cardholder has completed a formal industry-regulated competency-based qualification, that includes technical theory with practical and competency assessments.
