This three-day course gives cellular network trainees a practical grounding in AC power systems as they apply to base station and related telecom installations, with reference to BS 7671.

Starting from core AC concepts and typical site power architectures, the course builds towards a clear understanding of switchgear, protection devices, power quality, generators, UPS and rectifier systems, as well as earthing, bonding and surge protection.

Throughout, BS 7671 requirements are translated into plain language and linked to real-world site layouts and operational scenarios.

Trainees will gain knowledge and understanding in how to interpret single line drawings, discuss potential AC power issues, recognise non-compliant or unsafe situations, and understand how AC power problems translate into network outages and degraded performance.

The course will also help prepare students who go on to study the City and Guilds 2382 qualification – The Wiring Regulations 18th Edition. And the TEL003 Level 3 Award in DC Power Systems in Telecoms.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  1. Explain fundamental AC power concepts and terminology used at telecom sites.
  2. Interpret single-line diagrams for a typical cellular base station.
  3. Understand how grid supply, generators, UPS and rectifiers interact in a telecom power chain.
  4. Identify and interpret key AC protection and switching devices (Fuses, MCBs, RCDs, contactors, Isolators, etc.).
  5. Describe typical power quality issues that affect cellular networks and how they’re mitigated.
  6. Apply safety practices and basic troubleshooting approaches for AC power issues at cell sites.

  • Day 3 – Measurements, Troubleshooting, Case Studies & Assessment
    Hands-on measurements of AC circuits, structured troubleshooting, and wrap-up.
