This 6-day day course covers the principles, practices and legislation for the specification and design of electrical installations and includes two City and Guilds assessments

It is intended for personnel in electrical contracting companies who have responsibility for the quality of the design, specification, installation and testing process. It addresses, in particular, the implications of the Wiring Regulations for Electrical Installations. It allows candidates to learn, develop and practice the skills required for designing and scoping electrical installations.

The course includes two assessment units:

401 – Design project
402 – 3 hour written test

The design project requires the candidate to complete a design exercise in their own time on a pre-defined installation. Drawing plans will be provided and tutor support will be available throughout the project.

The 3-hour written exam is set and marked by City & Guilds.  It will be run by PTT from 18:00 onwards on a date set by City & Guilds. Usually the following week after the course

In order to gain the qualification, candidates must pass each unit.

The 6 -day course prepares candidates to complete their design project and the written exam.
The course breakdown is as follows:-

  • Introduction to statutory and non-statutory requirements relating to electrical design, construction and management.
  • The design, construction and commissioning processes
  • The fundamental principles for the design and installation of associated protective systems relating to electrical installations
  • The factors that affect choice of sources and environmental technologies used within electrical installation design
  • Applying design and verification procedures for single and poly phase electrical installations

There are no formal entry requirements for candidates undertaking this qualification. However, It would be expected that candidates have a basic knowledge and understanding of electrical science and principles and experience of electrical installation work either within the electrical contracting industry or an allied trade and that they have already gained a Level 3 qualification in Inspection and Testing
