Proactive Technical Training’s New Course

From September, PTT will be offering the Level 2 Electrical Installations Diploma to prospective electricians as a part time evening course. The course is designed for candidates with no previous experience and will coach them in all the necessary knowledge and skills to achieve certification. It is designed for people without electrical qualifications, who are not currently in the trade and are unable to take the apprenticeship route. This course will allow them to get started in the industry.

Structure Of The Course

The course is one of a collection of City & Guilds electrical courses offered by PTT and lasts for 15 weeks, over two 3-hour sessions per week. All classes are held during the evening to avoid clashing with work commitments.

The Level 2 Electrical Installation Course comprises five units, each of which requires a mixture of practical and written work:

1) Health and safety. Trainees will learn about the relevant HSE legislation applicable to their future working scenarios. They will be taught how to ensure a safe working environment, how to deal with health and safety issues and how to identify and resolve work hazards.

2) Electrical scientific principles. These will be taught from the ground up, providing a thorough priming in basic mechanics, the relationship between magnetism and electricity, and the mathematical principles behind electrical work. The meaning of the standard units of electrical theory – volts, amperes, and ohms – will be covered.

3) Electrical installation technology. Students will learn how to wire electrical installations, as well as the requirements for earthing systems. They will also be taught how electricity is supplied and the need for different varieties of micro-renewable energies. Further teaching will be given on the significance of industry regulations and how to obtain additional technical information.

4) Practical unit. The practical unit of the course allows trainees to put their skills to the test in simulated real-world scenarios.

5) Communication. This unit teaches trainees about the importance of effective interaction at work, plus methods of communicating effectively. Students will learn how to understand team members and their roles, how to find and apply information sources and how to communicate clearly with others working on projects.

Recommended Reading

Students embarking on the course will receive a list of recommended reading material. Among these is the City & Guilds Electrical Installations Book 1 by Peter Tanner. This text covers the material needed for a City & Guilds qualification as well as up-to-date information on specifications and industry standards.
