What Electrical Hazards Should You Be Aware Of?

  • Shock currents: an electric shock occurs when an electrical current passes through the human body, potentially causing severe and life changing injuries, or even cardiac arrest in the case of sustained exposure to intense currents. Common causes include direct contact with live electrical components, earthing issues, and insulation failures. Safety measures include using implementing automatic disconnection of supplies to detect and interrupt potential circuit faults.
  • Excessive temperatures: Overloading circuits, equipment malfunctions, or inadequate cooling can cause electrical circuits to overheat, damaging equipment and increasing the risk of fire. To prevent overheating, it’s important to maintain adequate ventilation and regularly monitor temperature levels. Thermal protection devices can also help manage temperature -related safety risks.
  • Ignition of explosive atmospheres: Electrical sparks can cause an explosion risk in environments where flammable gases and dust are present – something you should be aware of when working in many industrial, chemical, and manufacturing settings. The consequences of ignition can be catastrophic, posing an acute risk to life and property.
  • Undervoltage: under voltage occurs when the voltage in an electrical circuit drops below the specified level. This can be caused by fluctuating power supply issues or excessive demand on the electrical grid. The risk can be mitigated through voltage stabilisers, and maintaining the correct load distribution across the installation.
  • Overvoltage: overvoltage is the opposite problem, involving an increase in voltage levels beyond the system’s normal operating range. This can damage equipment, spark fires, and break down insulation. Common causes include lightning strikes and surges in the power grid. Surge protectors, voltage regulators, and lightning surge arresters are recommended to protect systems and applications against overvoltage.
  • Arcing: electrical arcing occurs when an electric current jumps across a gap, creating intense heat that can quickly ignite fires. Arcing is often caused by insulation failures and loose connections or poor working practices. Following proper procedures, and wearing appropriate PPE can reduce the risk of arc related hazards.
