Online study has grown substantially in popularity since the advent of the internet made it possible for students to read and complete coursework & exams in their own time. In Britain, we work some of the longest hours in the whole of Europe so there is often precious little time for us to find the time to improve our career prospects through further education.

Online courses allow you to learn at your own pace so that you can make time for work and for family. If work is going to be hectic for the next month or two, that’s fine – you can simply pick up your course where you left off.

With online learning, you don’t have to be at a certain place at a certain time in an alien environment. There’s no need to battle with public transport to and from your lessons or find a space to park your car.

Employers love to see online learning on a CV. Although more and more of us are doing it, most people neglect the opportunity that remote learning offers them. There’s no clearer demonstration of your professionalism or your commitment to advancing your career than you taking time out of your busy schedule to learn.

Traditional learning approaches in a college or at a university bring additional costs – it’s your fees which pay for the building, for the support staff, and the general running costs of a standard educational institution. Learning online removes many of these costs from your course provider, savings which are passed onto you with sometimes substantially reduced tuition fees.

It’s a new way of learning and an approach that Proactive Technical Training is embracing for our students, whether they enrol directly or via their employer.

In this article, the online team at Proactive Technical Training announce three of our new distance learning courses for 2019.

Electrical Safety Management

Underpinning any business or organisation must be a culture of health and safety that recognised the risks associated with any installed electrical system. And that means more than just providing guidance on electrical safety, it means the introduction and continued observance of the principles of managing the dangers inherent in electrical installations.

Designed for people with little or no electrician training and those with little or no experience in managing electrical systems, the course offers those individuals with a wish or a need to improve their knowledge of electrical safety. The classroom-based version of this course has been particularly popular with the public sector (including schools and emergency services), the health sector, the hospitality sector, and companies involved in manufacturing, residential property, retail, transport, utilities, and more.

Students are taught how to manage electrical safety:

  • electrical safety policy (including leadership, planning, design, and electrical system standards)
  • electrical safety procedure (including identifying and controlling risks, safe working practices, workplace precautions, procedures, maintenance, documentation, incident investigation, performance evaluation, training, and more), and
  • issue management (including work undertaken on or near to live electrical parts that are exposed, how to operate electrical machinery, how to work with electrical contractors, buried cables, overhead power lines, and high voltage equipment)

Now, this course is available online for both students who apply directly and students nominated by their employers. To find out more, please contact us.

C&G 2382 18th Edition BS: 7671 (2018)

On the 2nd July 2018, the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulation was released. At the same time, the new City & Guilds 2382 qualification was launched covering the new regulations.

In addition to our 3-day course, 1-day course, and ½-day course (no exam), Proactive Technical Training has also released a 35-hour e-learning course (you take the exam at our centre once you have completed your training).

Our online course is comprehensive covering the regulations as stipulated in the full 18th edition, referencing the changes made from the 17th edition. The course has been developed by the Institution of Engineering and Technology. You can view samples here (Part 4 Module 2) and here (Part 7 Module 2).

For the first time, the course is available online through Proactive Technical Training.

Arc Flash Protection

Arc flashes and the resulting Arc blasts are responsible for thousands of the most horrific injuries every year in the workplace in Britain. Several people die from them, on average, each year. If your organisation has not factored in the threats posed to staff, customers, contractors, and visitors from Arc flashes, we sincerely urge you to make remedying that lack of protection a commercial priority.

Over the course of the last few years, hundreds of students have taken out one day Arc flash safety course held at our Tring campus. We’re now pleased to be able to offer the exact same knowledge and accreditation to students with the online version of the course.

Designed for electricians, electrical engineers, and any staff member responsible for or working on electrical switch gear, our online Arc flash course introduces students to proven methods on preventing their occurrence, PPE, how to report hazards, risk and hazard analysis, terminology, and legislation.

Using your online learning portal, you’ll complete multiple different types of assessment and, at the end, you’ll be accredited with a “Statement of Attainment” demonstrating to your employer, your colleagues, and the Health and Safety Executive that you know and understand the risk of working in an Arc hazard zone and how to mitigate those risks.
