What Is Overvoltage?

Overvoltage is a situation that occurs when electrical voltage exceeds the maximum allowable level for a specific electrical device, component, or system. Overvoltage can cause severe damage to electronic devices, overheating, and even fire if not properly mitigated through protective measures, such as surge protectors or voltage regulators.

What Causes Overvoltage?

Overvoltage is caused by several factors, including:

  • Lightning strikes: Lightning can induce extremely high voltages in power lines and electrical systems, causing extensive damage to connected electrical appliances, such as kitchen appliances, televisions, internet routers, and computers.

  • Earth faults: Breakdowns in the earthing system can lead to voltage rises. This can occur when the neutral conductor is inadvertently earthed at multiple points, creating a parallel path for current flow and causing overvoltages on the earthed conductor.

  • Equipment failure: Malfunctions in voltage regulators, transformers, or generators can result in overvoltage. For example, a failure in the voltage regulation system of a generator could cause it to produce voltages that exceed its rated output, potentially damaging connected equipment.

  • Power grid disturbances: Issues such as sudden load shedding or faults in the transmission system can create voltage spikes. Transient overvoltages can travel through the grid, impacting different points in the network and posing risks to sensitive equipment that is connected to the system.

How To Fix Overvoltage

When it comes to overvoltage, prevention is better than cure as proactive measures taken during installation can prevent costly damage and downtime later. When planning electrical installations, care must be taken to ensure that electrical systems with dissimilar rated voltages are kept separate.

This involves proper system design by utilising appropriate circuit breakers, fuses, and surge protection devices. Implementing rigorous earthing and bonding practices, and following relevant electrical codes and standards, can also significantly reduce the risks of overvoltage.
