Level 3 Electrical Installations Diploma

Starting in January 2023, Proactive Technical Training(PTT) will be offering the Level 3 City & Guilds 2365 Diploma in Electrical Installations. The course is aimed at new electricians who have completed their Level 2 Diploma and will give them the skills and knowledge needed to become a fully qualified electrical improver.

With this qualification, candidates will be ready to take the final steps toward ECS gold card certification, the most widely recognised formal certification in the electrotechnical industry. It also provides the necessary grounding to embark on more specialist training, for electricians looking to pursue their careers in particular areas.

Course Structure

The Level 3 course is comprised of six modules, featuring a combination of practical and written work.

1) Environmental techniques. This unit teaches the fundamental principles of micro-renewable energy and water conservation technologies, as well as the planning, installation, and assessment of various systems.

2) Electrical scientific principles (Level 3). Candidates will learn the fundamentals of electrical science needed to understand electrical supply systems. They will learn about AC theory as well as the functioning of different machines and devices, including DC machines. Electrical components, lighting systems and heating will all be covered.

3) Fault diagnosis and rectification. Building on a grounding knowledge of health and safety requirements, candidates will learn how to diagnose and rectify faults in complex electrical systems. Learners will develop their skills through simulated faulty environments.

4) Inspection, testing and commissioning. This module will provide the knowledge and skills needed to inspect and test complex electrical systems according to regulatory requirements. Principles of safe commissioning will also be covered. Simulated environments will be used to show practical application and development.

5) Electrical systems design. Learners will gain an understanding of electrical design by determining system requirements and applying design techniques. They will also learn how to plan work programmes and navigate the contractual implications of electrical design.

6) Career awareness. This unit is designed to help candidates plan and develop their careers. The importance of setting goals and preparing documents like CVs and personal statements will be shown. Learners will also be encouraged to explore the many career pathways open to them.

Schedule And Preparation

The City and Guilds Level 3 electrical installation course is run over a 16-week period, with two evening sessions per week, between 6 and 9 pm. This is ideal for students with ongoing work commitments during the daytime.

To prepare for the course, we recommend candidates read the City and Guilds Electrical Installations Book 2 by Peter Tanner. The text covers much requisite material with up-to-date industry specifications and standards, and helps to prime candidates for the course modules.
