What Type Of Cable Connection Do You Need?

  • Crimp connectors: Crimp connectors are formed by crimping the connector onto the stripped ends of wires to create a secure and reliable connection within an electrical circuit. these connectors are the mainstay of electrical installations.
  • Spade connectors: these fork -shaped connectors are designed to be easily inserted and removed from screw terminals without the need to completely remove the screw. This makes them ideal for installations that require frequent connection and disconnection, such as automotive wiring and audio equipment.
  • Ring terminals: ring terminals fit over a screw or stud to create a closed loop connection that remains attached even if the screw loosens slightly, making them ideal for permanent electrical systems. They are often deployed in applications where vibration is a concern, such as some industrial plant, commercial and household appliances.
  • Heat shrink connectors: these connectors are designed to give enhanced insulation and protection to electrical connections, and are created from a heat sensitive material that shrinks when heated, creating a tight seal around the connection. This increases the connector’s resistant to moisture, dust, and mechanical stress, making them well suited to harsh environments.
  • Non-permanent connections: non-permanent or temporary connections give you and your customer the flexibility to upgrade or adjust the application without extensive rewiring. Recently, various toolless design connectors e.g. Wago blocks, have come onto the market for both permanent and non-permanent applications; these connectors have push-in or snap-on features that reduce installation time and complexity.

The Right Tools For The Job

As cable connectors vary considerably in design and function, it is essential to use the right tools to create a durable and secure connection. While some connectors can be installed with just a screwdriver, many require crimpers to compress and secure the connectors onto the ends of your cables. By applying the correct amount of pressure, crimpers create connections that are snug and reliable, leading to strong electrical bonds and reducing the risk of failures and hazards. We recommend keeping a crimper handy in your toolkit at all times in case you run into trouble with a connection.

By investing in the right tools and terminations , you can improve electrical safety and reliability on your installations and shorten your turnaround time for large electrical installation projects.

Following Manufacturer Instructions

Even seasoned electricians should adhere to manufacturer guidelines for electrical cable connections. Components that appear superficially similar might require different assembly techniques, depending on the brand, and neglecting these instructions can compromise connectivity and even damage the system. BS7671 specifies strict requirements for cable connections as does the Electricity at Work Regulations, Regulation 10.
